Muse, by definition, is ‘an artistic force personified’ and that has been the mantra for creative hair artisans Roger Bowshall and Philip Barwick ever since they opened the doors to their first salon nineteen years ago. Since then Muse has evolved from a modest hairdressing salon, set up by two great friends, into a multi-award winning business that’s regarded as one of Australia’s most creative and progressive hair institutions.

It didn’t take long for team Muse to hit their stride… Within the first year of business their unique conceptual styles were seen adorning catwalks of Australian Fashion Week, editorial spreads and photographic galleries to boot.  Since then, they’ve been asked to direct shows at Australia’s most prestigious fashion event ever since, a true testament to Muse’s unique approach to hair-artistry, at the most distinguished industry level.

Even with this early success, Philip and Roger refused to rest on their laurels. In 2008 they made the decision to move from Darlinghurst into a larger Crown Street salon, in the heart of bustling creative hub Surry Hills, bolstering their already impressive roster of professional hairdressers and evolving Muse into the hair brand it is today.

As well as his integral role as co-director of Muse, Philip is also a Redken Artistic Director and Hair Educator, which takes him to many corners of the world – including the prestigious Redken 5th Avenue Exchange in New York. His talent also hasn’t gone unrewarded, being recipient of both Australian Hairdresser of the Year and New South Wales Hairdresser of the Year at the Australian Hair Fashion Awards on two separate occasions, as well amassing a number of other accolades for the team.

Roger has been equally busy evolving Muse into the powerhouse salon brand it is today, recruiting Sydney’s most talented stylists and colourists that fit Muse’s ethos. When asked what makes Muse the success it is, 10 key words come to his mind immediately: education, indulgence, experience, humble, laughter, listen, share, reflect, evolve and grow.

Without you, the client, there would be no ‘Team Muse’ to talk about and so the continued close collaboration between client and stylist is incredibly important to Roger and Philip.
